Abstract

Several indicators and indices have been developed at the global level to assess and evaluate the situation of food and nutrition security. However, there were no indicators linkages with the concept of sustainability that can be implemented at the regional level. West Java is the province of Indonesia with the largest population. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a sustainable food and nutrition security index in West Java. This study used secondary data from 2015 with an analysis unit 18 districts and 9 cities. This study included four steps: analysis of the availability of cereals (non-wheat) and tubers, identification of potential indicators, selection of indicators, and compiling the index. Multivariate analysis with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to construct an index based on the food and nutrition security pillar. This research showed that sustainable food and nutrition were developed through 17 selected indicators, consisting of 4 indicators of sustainable food availability, 4 indicators of sustainable food access, and 9 indicators of smart food utilization. As a result, the sustainable food and nutrition security index in West Java in 2015 reached -0.02. The highest index is in Indramayu District (2.45), while the lowest is in Sukabumi City (-1.46).
